4 – Hagar with Son Ishamel Leaving Abraham’s Community

This painting depicts the banishment of Hagar and her son Ishmael from Abraham and Sarah’s tent. Hagar, an Egyptian slave, bore Abraham’s child, in the Jewish tradition, whereby the master becomes the owner of the child. Sarah felt threatened by Ishmael’s potential inheritance to their faith.
